Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru’s 2022 New Year Goodwill Message To The Good People Of Lagos East Senatorial District

My dear esteemed constituents of the Lagos East Senatorial District, it gladdens my heart to welcome you into the year 2022. The year 2021 was a challenging one. From all fronts, the world witnessed unprecedented trying times. The dreaded COVID-19 scourge evolved into new variants like Delta and now the deadly Omicron threatening to shut down the world once again.

Last year was indeed a trying period for many households and the nation at large. What we as one of the Trustees of your sacred mandate have tried to do, is to deliberately and continuously keep the hope of our people alive by working assiduously to deliver on the promises I made to you during the 2020 Lagos East Senatorial By-election electioneering campaign.

As you will recall, I was inaugurated as a Senator of the Federal Republic on the 15th December, 2020. In fulfilment of our legislative agenda, I have sponsored many Bills and motions which cover different sectors including banking and financial services, the economy, copyright, health, infrastructure and the provision of the legal framework for the reduction of the cost of governance.

Since our inauguration, we have prioritised Education, Health, youth development, critical infrastructure, technology and innovation and Human Capital Development in our legislative intervention. In January 2021, I kicked off the COVID-19 Relief Scheme for the vulnerable people in the Lagos East Senatorial district and it has been running since then and this covers about 2500 constituents.

I also facilitated four blocks of 24 classrooms with compliments of furniture and 16 toilets to Aga Primary School in Ikorodu, a 200-solarpowered street lights at the Ikorodu Campus of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), and also the construction of a 40-bed Health facility and Dental Centre is currently under construction. In September, 2021, Six Hundred (600) brilliant but indigent students also benefited bursaries from the endowment under my Foundation, TACT Foundation and this will continue.

In November 2021, in upskilling and enhancing the capacity of MSMEs in the district, I also organized a one-day Business Workshop for 1000 MSMEs across the Senatorial District. Two major take away from the seminar was the gift to the participants of the well-researched knowledge packs “The Entrepreneural kit” comprising of Seven valuable business topics on: tax management, Strategy; Financial Management; Digital technology; marketing and communications; human capital management and legal. These are topics authored by reputable business consulting firms such as: KPMG, Deloitte, ACCA, Banwo and Ighodalo, Verraki Business Solutions etc. I initiated a N100,000,000 (One Hundred Million Naira) Constituency Intervention revolving Loan at 6% interest rate, which will be enhanced by  additional 100 Million Naira from the Bank of Industry (BOI).

In Ibeju-Lekki, two blocks of 6 classrooms are currently under construction at RCM Primary School Iwerekun, Ibeju-Lekki while in Kosofe Local Government, 1 block of 3 classrooms are also underway at Ajelogo Primary School. An ICT centre is also coming up at the Igbobi College I moved a motion calling on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the Ikorodu/Sagamu Road and Ikorodu/Itoikin/Epe Epe Road. Our intervention with necessary follow-up and leveraging on our network has yielded positive outcomes as the Federal Government has included the funding of Ikorodu-Shagamu, in the SUKUK Financing program and the capital raising for the Sukuk was concluded in December 2021 for about N250 Billion Naira and the Ikorodu-Shagamu is priority with about N8.8 Billion naira earmarked for its construction.

Also, the Ikorodu-Itoikin road has been included in the 2022 budget and the procurement for its rehabilitation is currently ongoing. In the same manner, I am currently setting up a Community Innovation Hub in partnership with a renowned technology company in Lagos to train youths in the senatorial district on relevant digital and innovation skills, and build the best entrepreneurs that can compete in the everdynamic global economy. The planned community Innovation Hub will take off in the first quarter of 2022. To ameliorate the challenges of access to health for our people, we have facilitated another 30-Bed Health facility at Mascara Health Centre in Agboiyi Ketu LCDA. In the same manner, another 40-bed is under construction at Isiu, Ikorodu North LCDA.

In Epe, a 960-spectator capacity mini stadium has also been facilitated for the benefit of people especially the youth. The two-pavilion sport facility is equipped with Basketball and Volleyball courts and the construction is in advanced stages with completion planned for end of January, 2022.

To further empower businesses to thrive through the creation of enabling environment, we have also been able to intervene in and facilitate the supply and installation of transformers in several locationsn in the District including Ito progressive CDA, Ito Isiu, Igbopa Ifesowopo CDA, Ijede, Ire Ifelodun CDA, Igbogbo-Bayeku, Magodo Community CDA Oke Ota Ona Ikorodu. Ikorodu GRA 2, Ibeshe Igbogbo-Bayeku, Ifeloju Abule Eko,Ijede Ikorodu, Sekungba CDA ikosi Ejirin, Isale Agoro CDA, Epe LGA, Ideraoluwa CDA, Eredo LGA and Olugayan CDA, Imota.

Equally, the popular Oluwa Fish Market in Epe is also being remodelled to have lock-up shops, open sheds and 48 toilets and this is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2022.

Dear Constituents of the Lagos East, I will be the first to admit that the economic and security challenges facing the county are daunting. Indeed, at no time in our recent past has the nation’s economy, well-being, peace and unity been so vigorously and persistently challenged. I however urge you not to despair but to remain hopeful. I believe that as we work conscientiously and openly, and together with unity of purpose and solidarity and with God on our side, we shall overcome all these challenges facing us.

The new year 2022 is a time to also strive to be better people and to also leverage on the lessons of the year 2021. Importantly it is not a time to be wasteful or careless about our economic activities, rather a time to harness every economic growth that the realities of the past years have thrown in our hands. As we also know that 2022 is the penultimate year to the general election of 2023, it is important to begin to assess our individual aspirations towards ensuring that Nigeria becomes a better place and this can only be achieved by ensuring that we all get registered as eligible voters and prepare to exercise our civic responsibilities without fears.

In conclusion, may I use this opportunity to once again thank all of you for your support since December 2020 and to plead that we work even better this year to provide better and more robust effective representation for the people of Lagos East Senatorial District in order to “ensure greater good to a larger number of people”. Let me assure you that I will not let you down. In 2022, the tempo of #DoingGood mantra won’t wane. We will not be distracted nor deterred.
Expect More!

I wish you all a happy New Year celebrations and a fruitful and prosperous 2022 in peace and good health.

God bless you all.
